On 25th February 2005, during EU Commissioner for Trade Peter Mandelson’s first visit to China since taking up the post in November 2004, he attended the inauguration of the European Chamber’s new Beijing office.

Congratulating the Chamber on its work, the Commissioner said, “The detailed briefings you prepare are exactly the kind of briefs policy makers in Brussels need.” Mandelson also said he had discussed issues raised by the Chamber with China’s Minister of Commerce and Vice Premier.

During dinner with Commissioner Mandelson, which attended by several hundred businesspeople and policy makers, he commended the Chamber on its role in representing European business interests in China,

“I strongly support your work. You make an important and invaluable contribution to our efforts … you have succeeded in building an influential and powerful organisation.”
